XI.
My mind is unnaturally clear when I'm on the Phobos. In my normal state of mind, there is so much extra. Like an old-time jungle explorer, my way and line of sight is constantly blocked; I have to cut through the growth all around me just to get to that one place, that one thought, and even then I can't see anything else to the front or at either side. But when the Phobos has taken over, I can see everything perfectly; there is a solidarity and order to my thoughts that I have never known otherwise.
And then, there was how I feel today.
My body feels absolutely depleted, my face is sunken in and dark. My head rings with every noise, and my forehead hurts from the constant tension of the muscles reacting to the sounds. Light is unacceptable when it does hit my eyes; luckily, there is very little on such an overcast day.
After last night's accident, I can remember I drove on straight into the ever-darkening night for quite some time. Time is the only thing that eludes me when I am on the Phobos, perhaps because I put too much emphasis on it in my normal state of mind.
Thinking about last night, I can feel the anxiety begin to weigh me down like lead lining my stomach. Just driving along down the road, with an injured man in my car. I didn't know how bad his injuries were yet. He could have been dying. He could have woken up and beaten the hell out of me. I didn't know, and I just didn't think about it. Instead, I focused on the road ahead, and what I was going to do next.
Originally, before the whole accident, I was simply going to stop somewhere at the end of Rider's Pass—after having had a bit more fun with the Store Manager, of course—and then claim the car had come to a stop, the mechanisms having been somehow vandalized. He would have been angry. At whoever had vandalized the car, that is.
The option to just pull over and part ways was no longer available to me, however. The man was out cold.
My initial reaction was to drop him off in front of the hospital and drive away. It seemed like a simple enough solution. Despite what television shows and movies claim, the police are rarely an efficient lot. Should the man die, there would be very little for them to go on as far as evidence as to who or what had happened, and there was very little chance they'd ever pin it down to someone as insignificant as myself. There was only one fatal flaw with this plan, and that was that the Store Manager could positively identify me should he ever wake up.
Of course, this is why my second idea—to bury him out in the middle of nowhere—was eventually vetoed. The man wasn't dead yet, and I couldn't assume that he would be.
Therefore, a more intricate ruse was called for.
